Conclusion

The 1950s was a period of intense debate about nurse education, the nature of the nurse as generalist or specialist, and whether nurses should continue to be trained according to the British system, or be developed through a supernumerary college-based, degree programme, as in North America. As Goddard realised, what was at stake was the proper task of the nurse and the very identity of nursing.

Despite Goddard's affirmation of the Nightingale tradition, by the turn of the half-century there was a perceptible loss of confidence in the traditions generally, and in the traditional apprenticeship model of nursing in particular. Perhaps it was this time of societal and moral change, including increased communications, that encouraged a search for new ideas, particularly North American ideas; educational philosophy differed fundamentally between Britain and North America.

As shown elsewhere, North American nursing was influenced by the liberal educational ideal of self-actualisation, and the philosophy of John Dewey's American pragmatism.122 North American nursing was optimistic about the intrinsic potential of human nature, reflecting the prevailing philosophy of education as a creative, liberating process of personal self-development. The British concept of education was perhaps more realistic. Human nature had to be nurtured and disciplined in order to shape the capacity for moral virtue. American nursing education was therefore nurse-centred, whereas the British nursing tradition sought to make the nurse patient-centred. As a modern British educationalist has recognised, for the nurse to learn to be responsive to patient needs entails an introduction into the practices of a corporate tradition.123
